How it Works
The Palomar Lux 1540 Fractional Laser works by breaking up, or fractionating, a single laser beam into an array of tiny microbeams. These microbeams are separated so that when they hit the skin, only tiny columns of light penetrate the skin. The skin surrounding each column is left untreated. These microbeams penetrate below the superficial layer of skin into the deeper tissue, creating narrow, deep columns of heat. This stimulates the natural healing process in the skin surrounding these tiny columns. New, healthy tissue is created and fresh, new collagen is produced to replace collagen damaged by aging and sun exposure.
Ablative vs. Non-Ablative Fractional Lasers
There are two types of Fractional Lasers on the market today: Ablative and Non-Ablative. With Ablative Fractional Lasers, the microbeams actually vaporize, or ablate, tiny columns of tissue, thus stimulating the body's healing response. With ablative lasers, only one treatment is required to achieve effective results. However, it is significantly more invasive than non-ablative. Several days of down-time are required. It is more painful. And there is more risk of infection, since the protective surface of the skin is being broken. The Kanata Skin Clinic uses the Non-Ablative Fractional Laser, which does not vaporize tissue. Instead, it simply creates tiny micro-columns of heat. Although several treatments are required to achieve results similar to the ablative laser, there is far less discomfort. There is minimal down-time. And, there is a much lower risk of complications, as the skin's protective layer is not being broken.
Why Choose Palomar?
Although there are a variety of Fractional Lasers on the market today, Dr. Hegmann chose Palomar because Palomar is recognized as a world-leader in the research and development of cosmetic lasers. Many major advances in laser technology have been based on Palomar research. In fact, Palomar was the company that developed Fractional Laser technology in the first place and it still holds the patents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a good candidate? Will it work on my skin colour? The Lux 1540 Fractional Laser works on any skin type, including very light an very dark skin. Dr. Hegmann will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
Does the treatment hurt? You will feel a little discomfort - some people describe it as feeling tiny pin-pricks of heat, but most people find this quite tolerable. Also, Palomar's Advanced Contact Cooling System continuously cools the area as it is being treated, which greatly increases the client's comfort.
What will I look like afterwards? Is there any down-time? Immediately after the treatment, the treated area will feel warm and will have some redness and swelling similar to a sun burn. This usually fades within a day. You can normally go back to your usual activities the day after the treatment.
How many treatments will I need? You will need a series of 3 - 5 treatments to achieve maximum results. These treatments should be spaced about 4 weeks apart.
How long does it take to see results? You may start to see improvement within a few days of treatment but, because the treatment has stimulated a healing process, it may take up to three months to see the full effect.
How much does it cost? Prices start at $350 per treatment. However, since a series of treatments is required, we offer a 15% discount on the purchase of a package of 4 treatments.
I am already getting Botox and Juvederm treatments, will this replace them? No. Because they all address wrinkles caused by different issues. They all work together. The Lux 1540 deals with wrinkles that are in the deeper layers of the skin. Botox acts on wrinkles that are created by muscle movement, such as frowning, squinting or smiling. Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, replace volume that is lost by the depletion of the fat layer underneath the skin. All of these treatments compliment each other quite nicely.
I'm interested. What can I do to find out if the Fractional Laser is right for me? The first step would be to book a consultation via e-mail , or call our office at: (613) 599-1314. It will also give them the opportunity to assess your skin and make informed recommendations about the best course of treatment. The consultation takes about 1/2 an hour and costs $35. |
