Electrolysis

At the Kanata Skin Clinic, we offer Electrolysis to clients in Ottawa and the outlying areas.

Electrolysis and Laser Hair Removal are the only two methods of hair removal that are proven to permanently reduce unwanted hair.

Laser Hair Removal is useful for large areas of unwanted hair.  Electrolysis is used in areas where fine shaping is required (such as the eyebrows), if only a few hairs are present, or when you are not a good candidate for laser hair removal.  For more information on Laser Hair Removal, click here.

Because we are a Medical Clinic, our environment must be maintained to medical standards of cleanliness.  Proper sterile technique is used at all times.  This is particularly important for electrolysis, where needles are involved....  So you don't have to worry.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  How does Electrolysis work?

Electrolysis works by introducing a very fine needle down along the hair shaft into the follicle, where the hair is produced.  The needle does not pierce the skin.  Once the needle is properly positioned, the follicle is destroyed using a very small current (electrolysis) and/or heat (thermolysis).

With the new Sequentium System, the intensity and duration of the current are modulated, which reduces discomfort and focuses more useful energy in the follicle, resulting in a more effective treatment.

2.  Is it painful?

Although you will feel a tiny twinge of heat or electricity during the treatment, most people find electrolysis quite comfortable.

The patented Modulating Technology used in the Sequentium System gradually increases and decreases the current each time a hair is treated. It also allows the esthetician to select the tolerance level for each client.

Both of these features greatly increase the comfort level for our clients - some have even fallen asleep during their treatment!

3.  Is it effective?

Yes.  In fact, electrolysis is the only recognized form of permanent hair removal.  (Laser hair removal is considered permanent hair reduction.)

Remember that every hair goes through a cycle of growth, resting, and then falling out before a new hair begins to grow in the follicle.  Electrolysis is most effective when treating hairs in the growth phase.

The skill of the esthetician is also an important factor in determining the effectiveness of the treatment.  The esthetician must have a solid understanding of the priciples involved in electrolysis.  She must also have a good eye and a steady hand to introduce the needle to the correct spot in the hair follicle for maximum effect.

When properly treated, the hair should easily slide out of its shaft with a gentle tug of the tweezers. Ideally the round root bulb should still be attached.  The hair should not need to be plucked out.

4.  How many treatments will I need?

This really varies, depending on the amount of hair to be removed, and how long the treatments are.

In addition , each hair is at a different phase in the growth cycle. Since electrolysis is most effective on hairs in the active growth phase, not all hairs will receive the maximum effect at each treatment.

Therefore, each hair may need to be treated several times before it is permanently removed.

5.  How much does it cost?

The cost of electrolysis is determined by the time taken for the treatment.  At the Kanata Skin Clinic, we charge:

                                 $22 for 15 minutes

                                 $44 for 30 minutes

                                 $66 for 45 minutes

                                 $82 for 60 minutes
