Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?

Yes! BOTOX® has been available for over 20 years, and has been used to treat many medical conditions before it's cosmetic uses were discovered. In fact, it has been used on children as young as 2 years old to treat cerebral palsy, at doses much higher and much more frequent than those used in cosmetic treatments. The safety of BOTOX® Cosmetic has been proven repeatedly over the past 20 years through extensive testing and research.

BOTOX® is an approved prescription drug by the FDA and the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada. It is manufactured by Allergan Inc.

2.  Will BOTOX® give me food poisoning?  Is it botulism?

No, it is not toxic, nor is it poisonous to you. BOTOX® is not botulism and will not cause food poisoning. To clarify, botulism is the name of an illness, not an active drug. BOTOX® is a purified protein that is extracted from naturally occuring bacteria and then rigorously processed under strict manufacturing guidelines–much in the same way that penicillin is made from mold.

Typically for a cosmetic treatment, you receive fewer than 100 units of BOTOX®. To make someone even remotely sick, you would have to receive over 35 times that amount.

3.  How long does the procedure take?

Generally, after the consultation, the procedure takes 15 minutes or less. Since there is no down time, you can literally have the treatment done over your lunch hour.

4.  How much does it cost?

The cost of a Botox® treatment is calculated by the number of units used.

The number of units used depends on several factors:

                      1.  The skill of the injector.

Using the optimal dose of Botox®  will ensure a beautiful,

                                       natural-looking result that lasts longer.

                       2.  The size of the muscle being treated.

                                      Larger muscles require more units.

                      3. How much relaxation of the muscle is desired.

In some areas, it is desireable to have less muscle-activity

(for example, in the frown lines).  In other areas, you want the muscle

to be more active, for more natural facial expressions.

Dr. Hegmann charges $10.98 per unit for up to 50 units of Botox® .  If you need more than 50 units, the price comes down to $9.98 per unit.

This price includes a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after your treatment to ensure you receive the best results possible and have no futher questions or concerns..

4.  How quickly does it work?

It can take up to 2 weeks for a BOTOX® treatment to take full effect. We usually ask patients to wait for 14 days to see the full results of their treatment.

5. How is the procedure done?

A BOTOX®   treatment involves a series of tiny injections into the muscle being treated.  It is injected with one of the smallest needles currently available. Most patients say the injections feel similar to a quick pinch. Frequently, the patient asks "is that all?"

6. How long does BOTOX® last? Is it permanent?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not permanent. An average treatment lasts 3-4 months. If you follow the doctor's directions and have your first 3 treatments promptly every 3 months, the next few treatments will start to last longer than 3 months. Eventually, many patients are able to reduce their treatments to twice a year.

7.  Will my face look worse when the BOTOX® wears off?

No. Your face will not look worse if and when you stop using BOTOX® Cosmetic. In general, your face will simply return to its previous appearance. If you use BOTOX® Cosmetic for a number of years before you stop, your muscles will have learned to relax on their own and you will end up looking a little better than when you began.

8. I don't want to look frozen. Will that happen?

This depends on the skill of the injector.  When properly done, BOTOX® treatments will leave you looking relaxed, rested, and refreshed. People will notice how good you look, but nobody will be able to guess what you've done.

9.  What are the side effects?

Side effects of BOTOX® cosmetic are rare and are not permanent. One side effect may be a drooping eyelid–but this occurs in less than 1% of patients and will last only a few days or a few weeks. Most patients do not experience any side effects.

10.  Can pregnant or nursing women have BOTOX®?

No. We recommend you wait until you are finished nursing to have BOTOX® treatment. Although there is no clinical evidence to prove any harm to the mother or child, we prefer to be safe.
