About Juvederm®

Juvederm-logo.jpg

Juvederm® is an injectable dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar that occurs naturally in the skin. The HA in Juvederm® combines with the water in your skin to help reduce the signs of aging. Juvederm® can be used to gently restore fullness, smooth out lines and wrinkle, and subtly enhance lips.

The Kanata Skin Clinic exclusively uses the Juvederm® suite of products. Each type of Juvederm® has a different concentration of HA, which is designed to address a specific area of concern.

How Juvederm® Works

As we age, soft tissue lying just beneath the skin is reduced, resulting in a loss of plumpness and causing deeper wrinkles and furrows.

Juvederm’s active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, is a natural substance found in the human body that adds volume to the facial tissue.

When injected into these deeper wrinkles and furrows, Juvederm® restores lost volume, helping you look younger and more refreshed.

Areas That Juvederm® Targets

  • Smile lines

  • Cheeks

  • Lips

  • Vertical lip lines

  • Marionette lines (The lines descending from the corners of the mouth to the chin)

  • Chin

  • Jawline

What to Expect from A Treatment

A topical anesthetic will be applied 30 minutes prior to the treatment. After the area is sufficiently numbed, Juvederm® is injected under the skin using a fine needle. For added comfort, all Juvederm® products contain the local anesthetic lidocaine.

The entire process typically takes about 90 minutes, including 30 minutes for the numbing cream.

Immediately after the treatment, there may be some swelling in the treated area. This should resolve within a couple of days. You may begin to see results immediately after your treatment. However, it will take up to two weeks to see the final result.

Downtime is minimal, and you should be able to return to your normal routine right away. However, you may experience some side effects such as tenderness, bruising, mild pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site.

Are You a Good Candidate for Juvederm®?

If you are feeling unsatisfied with the way your face looks as you age, you may be a good candidate for Juvederm®.

The ideal candidate will also:

  • be in good physical and emotional health,

  • want to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,

  • want to enhance the size and shape of your lips,

  • and have realistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure.

*Juvederm® is not a solution for severe scarring or thin or loose skin.

It is also not suitable for patients:

  • taking antibiotics, heart medication, or other drugs,

  • with certain medical conditions such as neurological diseases,

  • with severe allergies,

  • allergic to injected local aesthetics,

  • with skin infections on the areas that would otherwise be injected,

  • with unrealistic expectations, and

  • who are nursing or pregnant.

How Long You Can Expect to See Results from Juvederm®

How long your results will last vary from patient to patient and depends on the area being treated.

However, Juvederm® is clinically proven to last 1 to 2 years, depending on the type of Juvederm® used and the area being treated. We have found that Juvederm® injected in areas where there is less facial movement, such as the cheeks and tear-trough, lasts longer than in areas where there is more movement, such as the lips and around the mouth. Since Juvederm® slowly metabolizes over time, some patients may want to come back for a top-up before then.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ What Will I Look Like? Will people know that I've had something done?

The outcome of the treatment depends on the skill of the injector.

Dr. Hegmann prefers to take a conservative approach when it comes to dermal fillers. His goal is always to achieve results that look completely natural. This way, when people look at you, they just see you –only slightly younger and more refreshed.

And Dr. Hegmann is continually refining and upgrading his skills in order to stay up to date on the most current techniques, so you will get the most natural-looking results possible.

+ How Long Will It Take to See Results?

You will begin to see an improvement immediately after the procedure. However, it usually takes about two weeks to see the final result.

+ What Is the Recovery Like? Is There Any Downtime?

Immediately after the procedure, there will be some swelling and redness in the area that was injected. This will usually resolve within a day or two. There may also be some bruising in the area, especially if you are someone who bruises easily. This should clear up within a week.

Some people prefer to book appointments at the end of the week, so they can take the weekend off if they wish to.

+ Does Juvederm® Hurt?

Dermal fillers are inserted under the skin by needle injection, and every injection hurts to some degree. However, there are certain steps that can be taken to minimize this discomfort. For example, Dr. Hegmann applies a numbing cream before the treatment, which significantly reduces the discomfort. Also, Juvederm® now includes lidocaine, so the area is frozen as the treatment is carried out.

The injector's skill and concern for the client's comfort can also play a major role in the comfort of the treatment. If you are concerned about the pain involved, make sure you take the time to find an injector who places a high priority on patient comfort.

+ How Much Does Juvederm® Cost?

Juvederm® is priced per syringe used. Prices range from $650 - $750 per syringe plus tax. Please keep in mind that clients often require more than one syringe to achieve the desired results. Dr. Hegmann will tell you how many syringes he recommends and will provide an exact estimate at your initial consultation.

+ Is Juvederm® Safe? Are There Any Side Effects?

Dr. Hegmann uses only the Juvederm® suite of products, the #1 brand preferred by doctors worldwide. These products are FDA and Health Canada-approved, have a long history on the market, and consequently, their safety profile is well-established.

Side effects are usually mild to moderate, lasting up to 7 days or less. They include temporary reactions at the injection site, such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling or bumps.

Dermal fillers are not recommended for people with severe allergies. For more information about the safety of dermal fillers, please read: Juvederm Safety & Side Effects

+ What Can I Expect After Juvederm® Injections?

You will see results immediately after the treatment. However, it can still take some time for Juvederm® to fully settle, so you may not see full results for up to two weeks.

You may also experience some bruising around the injection site. This should subside within a few days after the treatment.

+ How Often Should You Get Juvederm®?

While Juvederm® can last between one and two years, you can have it injected again as soon as you start noticing the effects wearing off. Unless you have an allergic reaction to the product, you should be able to have the procedure done repeatedly every year.

+ How Much Juvederm® Do I Need?

Patients typically need between one and two syringes of Juvederm® per area. However, your doctor may find that you need more injected. How much you Juvederm® you will need to achieve your desired results depends on a variety of factors such as age and how deep your wrinkles are.
